Great-Blue-Touraco RwandaThe Nyungwe Forest National Park:
The Nyungwe Forest national park is a big, high altitude mountain forest, covering about 1030 square kilometers, ranging from 1600 to 2950 meters, and is, located in the south west Rwanda.
It is also the epicenter of the Rivers " Congo-Nile ", whose waters empty into the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea, respectively.

Its rich bio diversity is truly stunning, and alluring. It is the home of 13 species of primates, has 275 different species of trees, 100 different Orchids, and for the birders, it has more than 300 recorded bird species, 25 of which are endemic to the area.
Among the commonly seen, are the Rwenzori Nightjar, Kivu Ground Thrush, montane Double Collared Sun, Red- Throated Alethe, Dwarf Honeyguide, the Handsome Francolin, and White-tailed Crested Flycatcher.
The avian icon of Nyungwe forest is, undoubtedly, the Rwenzori Blue Turaco.

The Nyungwe forest is also a productive area for the night birding, especially between the park's boundary, and the Gisakura Tea Plantations.
It is the only park in Rwanda, where birding may be done, calmly, on foot, without the threatening fears of any possible attacks from elephants, buffaloes, or lions.

Productive Areas:

  • Follow the tarmac road from Gisakur to Uwinka, and on to the land mark showing the Bugugu trail.
  • The Cyamudongo forest is also a fairlyproductive area for birding, but it is better done, in combination with chimpanzee trekking, owing to its far distance from Gisakura hotel.

Timing: All year round.
